Why rent?
Renting is becoming much more common as the price of textbooks skyrocket. Being able to rent a text book at a fraction of the retail price is appealing for obvious reasons. Also, by renting, you are ensuring a higher quality copy of a textbook than you can gamble on getting from a used copy. And, of course, when your semester is over you don’t have to worry about how you are going to sell this now-used copy.

How long can I keep my rental?
To keep things simple, we rent books for semesters. Depending on when you rent the book, it will be due back at the end of the current semester as listed on the chart below:

Do I have to pay for shipping to receive my rental?
As always, all $49+ orders qualify for FREE SHIPPING via USPS Media Mail (5-8 business day delivery). But, if time is of the essence, we offer UPS Ground, UPS 2nd Business Day Air and UPS Next Business Day Air options as well. You can view our Shipping FAQs here. When it’s time to return your rental, we pick up the tab on any rental returned after 30+ days, and you can print out a pre-paid UPS shipping label from your Customer Account.

How can I find when my rental book due?
Your rental due date is displayed many times during shopping and checkout.  If you have already rented a book, you can find your rental’s due date by referencing the e-mail confirmation we sent you immediately after your rental transaction or by checking your Customer Account under “My Orders/Rentals”.  You may also call us at 1-866-808-5635 (M-F 9am-5pm CST) to obtain your due date. Rental returns must be postmarked on or before the due date to avoid incurring any penalties. 

I get a message during checkout that says I can’t rent because my credit card expires too soon
Yes, the credit card you use cannot expire before or during the month of your rental return. Credit cards are used as collateral on your book rental, and must be active in the event of late or non-return. As such, the credit card you use cannot expire before or during the month of your rental return.

Can I return my rental before the end of the semester?
You may return your rental for any reason during the first 30 days of the rental for a full refund of the price of the rental.  However, for a fully refunded return, you will have to pay for the return shipping and cannot utilize a pre-paid rental return shipping label. How do I return my item(s) at the end of my rental period?
You can return your rental by logging into your Customer Account, under the “My Orders/Rentals” section, find your rental order, and selecting the link labeled “Click here for Pre-Paid Rental Return Label For This Order”. This will allow you to print a pre-paid USPS label for the return of your rental. You can then drop off the package with any USPS mailbox, post office or driver. Make sure that you package your returned book(s) securely. Remember that you are responsible for the condition of the book until it arrives back in our warehouse.

Does my rental need to arrive back to your warehouse by the due date?
No. You must simply print the label and deliver your shipment to a USPS post office or hand to a USPS driver by the due date.

Why does the option to print my Rental Return Label not appear in my account?
The link to print a return label does not appear until 30 days after your rental is made.  During this initial 30-day period, you may return the item to us for a full refund, however, you are responsible for shipping charges on this return. After your rental has been returned and received by our warehouse, the link will also cease to appear.

Can I return a book without using the pre-paid USPS label?
Yes, you can, however you are responsible for assuming shipping costs if you choose to not utilize our prepaid USPS label. Please ship your return to the following address, however please note that since your package will not show a postmark date in our system, you should have the return to our warehouse by the due date or contact us at 1-866-808-5635 to let us know.

How much am I charged if my rental is late?
If your shipping label has not been printed by the rental due date, you may incur a penalty equivalent to 10% of the rental cost of your book. If, after 14 days after your rental due date, your package shipping label has not been printed, you will be charged for the retail price of a new copy of the book less the initial rental charge and any penalties incurred.

Will I be notified when my return is due?
Yes. We will send a reminder e-mail at least 14 days prior to the end of your rental period with instructions on how to return your rental to us. In addition, we will send you a follow-up e-mail if you have failed to print your return shipping label by the due date.

Can I extend the length of my rental?
Yes! During checkout you will be given the option to select a check box that will allow you to extend the rental for an additional semester for an additional charge.

Can I purchase my rental?
Yes! If you wish to purchase your rental, simply call us at 1-866-808-5635 and have your order number available. We will charge you the retail price of the title less the price you have already paid for the rental and the book will be yours.

I’ve lost or had my return stolen, what can I do!?
While you are in possession of the rental, you are solely responsible for its care and its safe return to our warehouse. If your return shipping label has not been printed by 14 days after your due date, you will be charged full retail price for its replacement.

My rental was damaged, can I still return it?
Rentals are the sole responsibility of the customer during the rental period and as such, if a book is damaged, a penalty may apply. This penalty will be determined by the extent of the damage. If the book is damaged, you may wish to call us at 1-866-808-5635 and discuss the extent of the damage to help you decide on your options. Books that are part of the Aspen Connected Casebook program will not get penalized for damage, but must be returned.

Can I write in my rental?
Moderate amounts of highlighting and writing are acceptable. Please remember that your current rental will be someone else’s future rental and, as such, don’t go crazy. Excessive writing and/or highlighting may incur a penalty. If your rental book is part of the Aspen Connected Casebook program, there are no restrictions on writing/highlighting in the book.
